Protesters in India have clashed with police during rallies against a new military recruitment scheme. Dozens of people were detained on June 19, 2022, as police used batons and tear gas to disperse protesters who had taken to the streets and damaged government buildings to protest against the policy. The scheme announced June 14 calls for young adults to be admitted into the armed forces for a period of four years and 75 per cent of the recruits taken in from 2022 must retire after their terms with no pension benefits. The new plan is a major departure from the past when military service was usually seen as a lifetime job, and comes as the nation’s unemployment rate is at its worst level since the 1970s.
