A China-funded airport in southwestern Pakistan is scheduled to be completed by mid-September 2023, four years after work began on the US$230 million project. The New Gwadar International Airport project is in Pakistan’s Gurandani area, some 26km (16 miles) northeast of the port city of Gwadar in Balochistan province. It has been primarily funded by the Chinese government as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a US$56bn development project which is a cornerstone of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative to link economies into a China-centred trading network. More than 200 Chinese workers and about 1,000 Pakistanis have been building the airport in shifts operating day and night.
