Former PM Shinzo Abe’s party sweeps to victory in landslide Japanese parliamentary election

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has won the latest parliamentary election by a landslide, securing 76 of the 125 contested upper house seats with its coalition partner. The election came days after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated while campaigning for conservative LDP candidates in Nara.

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has won the latest parliamentary election by a landslide, securing 76 of the 125 contested upper house seats with its coalition partner. The election came days after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated while campaigning for conservative LDP candidates in Nara. Current prime minister and LDP leader, Fumio Kishida, vowed to continue Abe’s legacy, including efforts to amend the country’s pacifist constitution.
