Bangkok celebrates first pride parade in 16 years with newly elected governor
Thousands gathered on the streets of the Thai capital on June 5, 2022, for the nation’s first official pride parade since 2006. “Naruemit Pride 2022” – naruemit meaning “creation” in Thai – was organised by a coalition of non-governmental organisations and received the backing of Bangkok’s newly elected governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who has voiced support for policies in the interest of sexual diversity and equality. The Southeast Asian nation has a highly visible LGBT community, but many in it still face major hurdles and discrimination in the conservative Buddhist-majority kingdom.
