It was 65 years ago today that The Quarrymen began to play... atop a parked coal truck on Rosebery Street, Liverpool.
This was during street celebrations marking the 750th anniversary of King John's issuance of a charter for the settling and development of the city. The lorry was supplied by the man at No. 76 who also ran the microphone cable through one of his front windows; the main organizer, Marjorie Roberts, lived at No. 84.
Mrs. Roberts's son, Charles, was a friend of drummer Colin Hanton. Which is why, when thugs from neighbouring Hatherley Street threatened to beat up the group members - especially "that Lennon" - they took refuge in her house.
Contrary to popular rumour and baseless assertions, the guy at bottom-right in the bottom image was NOT Paul McCartney.
