Japan’s parliament has passed a bill imposing tougher penalties for online insults. The amendment of the penal code will take effect in late 2022, with offenders subject to prison time of up to a year, or a 300,000 yen (US$2,228) fine. The revised bill came in the wake of the death of Netflix reality television star Hana Kimura, who was subjected to relentless cyberbullying before she took her own life.
