China opens ‘relic hospital’ in Chongqing to better preserve World Heritage Dazu Rock Carvings
A ‘relic hospital’ was opened on June 11, 2022, to help maintain and preserve a Unesco World Heritage Site in China. The Dazu Rock Carvings in southwest Chongqing are made up of 75 protected sites containing some 50,000 statues, with over 100,000 Chinese characters forming both religious and secular inscriptions and epigraphs. The hospital will provide technical support to better preserve and restore the World Heritage Site, which has carvings dating back to the 9th-13th centuries.
