Between 1688 and 1956, Britain went from an irrelevant European backwater, to the most dominant nation on Earth, and back again. It required a series of shrewd and brilliant political and military leaders, and a series of successful wars (War of the Spanish Succession, Seven Years' War, and the Napoleonic Wars).
