The UK's Cabinet Office announced that its AI tool, the Fraud Risk Assessment Accelerator, helped recover £480 million from fraud in the 12 months from April 2024. This represents the highest amount ever recovered by government anti-fraud teams in a single year.
The tool cross-references data from various government departments to identify vulnerabilities and fraudulent activities, including £186 million linked to COVID-19-related fraud such as Bounce Back Loans and council tax fraud. The AI system also helps pre-empt fraudulent proposals by scanning policies for weaknesses before implementation.
The recovered funds are being reinvested into public services like nursing, teaching, and policing. Ministers plan to license the technology internationally, including to countries in the Five Eyes alliance.
Despite its success, there are concerns about AI fairness and privacy, especially following critiques of earlier welfare fraud AI tools. The announcement came ahead of a Five Eyes anti-fraud summit attended by representatives from the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.news.yahoo+6
