On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty, a pair of young Cantonese opera performers in the city say they are determined to keep working to keep the traditional art form alive. Since the former British colony’s handover, there was a coordinated effort involving government, cultural organisations and performance sectors in Hong Kong as well as the neighbouring city of Macau and Guangdong province on the mainland. has strengthened communication and worked together to get Cantonese opera on Unesco's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Today, Cantonese opera has become an almost daily activity in Hong Kong practised by troupes of different sizes.
