China scales back emissions target with half of new electricity use to come from renewables by 2025
China’s top economic regulator, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), has unveiled a new five-year plan for the country’s renewable energy targets. In three top-level documents released on June 1, 2022, the NDRC laid out the country’s clean-energy commitments, including the goal of having renewables make up half of the country’s new electricity consumption by 2025. The new target was scaled back from an earlier 66 per cent goal set in 2021. Beijing also vowed to achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030, before cutting emissions to net-zero by 2060.
