Dragon boat racing returns after 2-year pandemic suspension in Hong Kong and mainland China

Dragon boat races were held in Hong Kong and in mainland China on June 3, 2022, for the first time in two years after restrictions to fight the coronavirus pandemic were eased. The rowing competitions took place during the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. During the festival, Chinese eat rice dumplings and pay homage to ancient poet Qu Yuan, who when forced into exile, threw himself into a river because he was so upset about the fate of his country. Officials on the mainland and in Hong Kong recently relaxed restrictions in time for the festival. On the mainland, tour bookings have started to rebound as Chinese travellers take short-distance trips during the holiday. In Shanghai, residents enjoyed their first public holiday since the lifting of a lockdown to fight a coronavirus outbreak in the city.
